Director National Insurance contributions: the annual earnings method

What it means in practice

Director’s National Insurance contributions are calculated using the annual earnings method, not monthly. Monthly deductions may vary, but the annual total is always correct.

What it means in practice

For regular employees, NIC is recalculated from scratch each month. For directors, NIC accumulates across the full year against annual thresholds. If you take an irregular salary (some months higher, some lower), your monthly NIC deduction adjusts each period as the cumulative total updates. This is normal and intentional.

💡 Good to know: Xero Payroll handles Director’s NIC automatically. We configure the director flag during payroll setup. If you ever notice your NIC deduction looks different from the previous month without a salary change, it is almost certainly the cumulative calculation adjusting.
