Discussing tax planning in your Quarterly Review call
How to get the most out of your Quarterly Review meeting
The Quarterly Review is an ideal opportunity to discuss any tax planning actions relevant to the current period. Here is how to get the most from this part of the conversation:
Come prepared with questions
Think in advance about any significant financial decisions in the coming quarter: a large purchase, a new hire, a dividend you are planning, or a change in your personal income needs. Raising these in your Quarterly Review means your accountant can advise on the optimal timing and structure.
Tax planning topics regularly discussed
- Whether to take a dividend before or after a particular date (for example before 5 April, to use the current year's dividend allowance)
- Whether a capital purchase should be made before or after your accounting year-end to maximise capital allowances
- Whether a pension contribution before year-end would meaningfully reduce your Corporation Tax bill
- Whether your current salary level remains optimal given any changes in the company's circumstances
💡 Good to know: Tax planning works best when it is done in advance. A decision made two months before your year-end has many more options available than the same decision made two weeks before. Use your Quarterly Review to plan ahead rather than react.
