HMRC mileage rates and how to claim them

Up to date rates and what counts as business mileage

When you use your personal vehicle for business travel, the company can reimburse you at HMRC's approved mileage rates without any personal tax charge.

The rates (2026/27 tax year)

  • Cars and vans: 55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles in the tax year
  • Cars and vans: 25p per mile above 10,000 miles in the tax year
  • Motorcycles: 24p per mile
  • Bicycles: 20p per mile

The 55p rate for cars and vans applies from 6 April 2026, up from 45p. The same rates apply to petrol, diesel, hybrid, and electric vehicles. You can also claim an extra 5p per mile for each fellow employee carried on a business journey.

What counts as business mileage

Business mileage is travel from your normal place of work to a business meeting, client visit, or any other location visited for business purposes. Commuting from home to your regular workplace does not count as business mileage. If your home is your normal place of work, traveling from home to any business meeting qualifies.

💡 Good to know: Keep a mileage log for every business journey. HMRC may ask for evidence of mileage claimed. The log should show the date, start point, destination, business purpose, and distance. A simple spreadsheet or a mileage tracking app is sufficient.
