Setting financial targets with your accountant
How to discuss your financial targets in your Quarterly Review
The Quarterly Review can include a brief discussion of financial targets for the coming quarter. This is an optional element, but useful for clients who want to use the review as a light business planning conversation as well as a compliance check-in.
What kind of targets to discuss
- A revenue target for the next quarter based on current pipeline
- A target net profit margin given your current cost base
- A cash reserve target (for example three months of operating costs held in the business)
- A personal income target for the year (salary plus dividends) and whether the business is on track to support it
How targets are used
Targets set in one Quarterly Review become a reference point in the next. We note them in your client record and compare actual performance to target in the following review.
💡 Good to know: Financial targets do not need to be precise or complex to be useful. Even a simple revenue target and a cash reserve minimum, reviewed every quarter, significantly improves financial discipline and reduces the likelihood of cash flow surprises.
