Telling us if your business activities change
You should inform us if your business activities change
Your accounting and tax position is based on the nature of your business activities. If what you do changes significantly, your compliance obligations may change too.
Changes that affect your tax position
- Starting to supply zero-rated or exempt goods or services (affects your VAT return)
- Beginning to trade internationally (affects VAT and potentially customs obligations)
- Hiring your first employee (triggers auto-enrolment and potentially the Employment Allowance)
- Purchasing property or land through the company (different tax treatment to trading assets)
- Starting a new business activity alongside your main trade
Changes that affect your HMRC registrations
Some changes require new or amended HMRC registrations. For example, starting to import goods from outside the UK may require an EORI number. We will advise on any new registrations required once you notify us of the change.
How to tell us
A brief message via live chat or email is sufficient. Describe what has changed or what you plan to do. We will review the implications and advise on any action required.
💡 Good to know: Changes in business activity can also affect your plan requirements. For example, hiring your first employee may mean upgrading from our Accounting Simple to our Accounting Standard plan. Contact us when any significant change is planned and we will advise on everything in one go.
