The 31 January and 31 July deadlines

The two payment deadlines you must know for Self Assessment

Self Assessment has two payment dates each year. Both are fixed regardless of when your return is filed. Knowing what is due on each date helps you plan your cash.

31 January

By 31 January you must: file your Self Assessment return online by this date; pay any balancing payment for the previous tax year (the amount not already collected via PAYE or payments on account); and pay the first payment on account for the current tax year (50% of last year's Self Assessment liability, if over £1,000).

31 July

By 31 July you must: pay the second payment on account: another 50% of last year's Self Assessment liability. No return is required on 31 July. It is a payment only.

💡 Good to know: Payments on account are estimates of next year's liability based on this year's figure. If your income will be significantly lower next year (you plan to take less in dividends, for example), you can apply to reduce the payments on account. Contact us and we will advise whether this is appropriate.
