VAT payment deadlines
VAT payment deadlines and quarter-end months - explained
The VAT return and the VAT payment are both due on the same deadline: one month and seven days after the end of your VAT quarter. For a quarter ending 31 March, the deadline is 7 May.
Your quarter-end months
HMRC assigns your quarter-end months when you register. Common groupings are March, June, September, December; or January, April, July, October; or February, May, August, November. Your quarter-end months are shown on your VAT registration certificate and in your Xero VAT settings. Mark the payment dates in your diary at the start of each year.
💡 Good to know: Setting up a VAT direct debit through your HMRC Government Gateway account means HMRC collects payment automatically three working days after the filing deadline. This eliminates missed payment risk entirely. We recommend it for all of our customers.
