Voluntary registration below the threshold
Why you may wish to register for VAT voluntarily
Businesses earning below £90,000 can choose to register for VAT voluntarily. Whether this is beneficial depends on your customer base and your cost structure.
When voluntary registration helps
If most of your customers are VAT-registered businesses, they can reclaim the VAT you charge, so adding 20% does not increase their cost. If you also have significant VAT-bearing costs (equipment, software, professional fees), reclaiming input VAT on those costs reduces your expenses. The combination can make early registration financially worthwhile.
When it does not help
If your customers are mainly consumers or small unregistered businesses who cannot reclaim VAT, adding 20% to your prices either reduces your margin or makes you more expensive than competitors. In this case, voluntary registration is rarely beneficial. Contact us to run the numbers for your specific situation.
💡 Good to know: Voluntary registration can be backdated up to four years to reclaim input VAT on purchases still held at registration. If you have incurred significant costs before registering, we can assess whether backdating is worthwhile.
