What counts as income on your Self Assessment

Declarations of income on your Self Assessment tax return - explained

Your Self Assessment tax return captures all your personal income from every source, not just what you receive from your company.

Income to declare

  • Director's salary (from P60)
  • Dividends from your own company and any other shares
  • Rental income from any property you let
  • Interest on savings above the personal savings allowance
  • Income from any freelance or self-employed work alongside the company
  • Benefits in kind reported on your P11D

Income you do not need to declare

  • Repayment of your director's loan account (not income)
  • Your ISA income (tax-free)
  • Premium Bond winnings

💡 Good to know: If you have any income source you are unsure about, tell us and we will confirm whether it needs to be included. It is always better to include something unnecessarily than to omit something that should be there.
