EORI registration
Everything you need to know about Economic Operator Registration and Identification numbers for your UK company
An EORI number (Economic Operator Registration and Identification) is a unique reference number issued by HMRC. Customs authorities use it to identify businesses who move goods across international borders.
Without a valid EORI number, shipments can be held at the border, leading to delays and additional storage costs. The number is free to obtain and, once issued, remains valid indefinitely.
💡We do not apply for or register EORI numbers on your behalf. The application is made directly with HMRC and is free of charge. Find out more below.
Who needs one?
You need a UK EORI number if your business moves goods between Great Britain (England, Scotland, or Wales) or the Isle of Man and any other country, including EU member states.
You also need one if you move goods between Northern Ireland and countries outside the EU, or if your business needs to lodge a customs declaration or submit an Entry or Exit Summary Declaration.
This applies to limited companies, sole traders, and partnerships. Even if your business falls below the VAT registration threshold, you still need an EORI number to trade internationally.
How do you apply for an EORI number?
EORI numbers are issued by HMRC and applied for through your Government Gateway account.
In most cases you'll receive your number immediately. If HMRC needs to carry out checks, it can take up to five working days.
Before applying, have the following to hand: your company's registered name and address, your Companies House registration number, your business start date and SIC codes, your VAT registration number (if applicable), the effective date of registration (if applicable), and details of an intended shipment.
👉You can apply at https://www.gov.uk/eori.
Is your EORI number the same as your VAT number?
No. A VAT number identifies your business for tax purposes. An EORI number is used specifically within the customs system.
