# How to register with the ICO
## Almost all limited companies must register with the ICO once a year for data protection purposes. Here's what it involves and how we can help
### What is ICO registration?
The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) is the UK's independent regulator for data protection. Under the Data Protection Act 2018 and UK GDPR, almost all UK companies are required to register with the ICO annually and pay a data protection fee, with only a very small number of exemptions. Failure to register when required can result in a fine of up to £4,000.
