Accepting payments: bank transfer, Stripe, and GoCardless
Different ways of accepting payments - explained
The faster you make it for customers to pay, the faster you get paid. Adding payment links to Xero invoices dramatically reduces the average payment time.
Bank transfer
Bank details added to your Xero invoice template allow customers to pay by bank transfer directly. This is free and suits Business to Business (B2B customers). Payments arrive into your bank account and are matched to invoices during reconciliation.
Stripe and GoCardless
Xero integrates with Stripe (card payments) and GoCardless (direct debit). Once connected, a ‘Pay Now’ button appears on emailed invoices. Customers can pay by card or set up a direct debit in seconds. Payment is reconciled automatically in Xero. Fees apply (typically 1.4% to 2.9% per transaction for cards; 1% plus a small fee for GoCardless).
💡 Good to know: Adding a Stripe or GoCardless payment link to your invoices typically reduces average payment time from 30+ days to under 7 days. For service businesses with regular recurring customers, GoCardless’ direct debit is particularly effective.
