HMRC registrations: what happens automatically and what does not

When HMRC may need to be contacted, and when it doesn’t

Companies House tells HMRC about your company automatically at incorporation, so Corporation Tax registration happens without you doing anything. Everything else is separate.

Automatic

  • Registering for Corporation Tax. HMRC posts a letter with the company's Unique Taxpayer Reference to the company’s registered office address shortly after incorporation.

Only when needed

  • VAT: once taxable turnover passes £90,000 in any rolling 12 months, or earlier by choice
  • PAYE: before the first salary payday, for you or any employee
  • Self Assessment: your personal registration, usually needed once you take dividends
  • When you start trading, HMRC must be informed within 3 months

Each registration and contact is handled by us as part of your plan. Just keep us informed as your plans firm up.

💡 Good to know: Send us your company’s Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) letter as soon as it arrives. We need the reference to act as your agent and to file your Corporation Tax return.
