How to find and correct a mistake in Xero

Finding and correcting mistakes in Xero - explained

Mistakes happen in bookkeeping. Xero makes it straightforward to find and correct most errors without affecting other transactions.

Finding a mistake

Use the Search function (magnifying glass icon) at the top of Xero to search by supplier name, customer name, amount, or reference number. Alternatively, run the Account Transactions report for the relevant account code and date range to see every transaction in that category.

Correcting a mistake

Click on the incorrect transaction to open it. Most approved invoices and bills can be edited directly. For bank transactions that have already been reconciled, unreconcile first (click the padlock icon), correct the transaction, then re-reconcile. Contact us before correcting any transaction that affects a submitted VAT return period.

💡 Important: Never delete a transaction that has been included in a submitted VAT return. Instead, raise a credit note (for a sales invoice) or create a reversing journal (for other entries). We advise on the correct approach for any correction affecting a filed period.
