How Xero bank feeds work

Setting up the bank feed and keeping it connected - explained

A bank feed is a live connection between your business bank account and Xero. Transactions flow in automatically each day, appearing in the bank reconciliation screen ready to be matched.

Setting up the feed

In Xero, go to ‘Accounting’, then ‘Bank Accounts’, and select ‘Add Bank Account’. Search for your bank. Most major UK banks (Barclays, Lloyds, HSBC, NatWest, Monzo, Starling, Tide) support direct Open Banking feeds. Follow the on-screen steps and authorise through your bank's own app or website.

Keeping it connected

Bank feed authorisations may expire and require periodic re-authorisation (typically annually for Open Banking connections). When a feed disconnects, Xero shows a warning in the bank account section. Re-authorise promptly so no transactions are missed.

💡 Good to know: If your bank does not support a live Xero feed, export a bank statement as a CSV from your online banking and import it into Xero. This is a manual process but achieves the same result. We can advise on the import format for your specific bank, if needed.
