Using Xero's Find and Match function
How it works and when to use it
Find and Match is used during bank reconciliation when the automatic matching does not find the correct invoice or bill for a bank transaction.
When to use it
Use Find and Match when a bank payment covers a different amount from the invoice (for example, a discount was applied), when a payment covers multiple invoices, or when the automatic suggestion is wrong. In the reconciliation screen, select ‘Find and Match’ on the relevant bank transaction.
How it works
Xero shows a list of outstanding invoices and bills. You can select one or more to match against the bank transaction. The combined total of the selected items must equal the bank transaction amount. If it does not, adjust using a split entry or contact us for guidance on how to handle the difference.
💡 Good to know: Find and Match is also how you reconcile PAYE and VAT payments to HMRC. When the monthly PAYE payment leaves your bank, use Find and Match to link it to the PAYE liability entry we post each month, rather than coding it as an expense.
